This is an "I-CHALLENGE": At the Mount Vernon PTA Council Dinner this past Friday, I was asked to give a speech as Board President of the Mount Vernon City School District. The speech was inspired by my colleague, MVCSD Trustee Brenda L. Crump. She is famous for saying "There is no "I" in the word TEAM." The Board of Trustees are a Board of nine that can have differences, but at the end of the conversation, must speak as a collective of one TEAM. So, my speech, and this posting goes on to reflect...even though there is NO "I" in TEAM; there is
AN "I" in IDEAL, INTEGRITY, IDEA, INDEPENDENT, INDUSTRIOUS, INNOVATION. In thinking through the "I" problem, I realize that the State's "COMMON CORE" also denies the existence of the "I" in INDIVIDUAL. That for a school system to focus on the "COMMON" is to deny that the difference between the genius and an ordinary person is that a "a genius can think more than ordinary people...and can think differently than ordinary people." ...and perhaps the problem with the COMMON CORE... and all of its precursor efforts at standardizing education... is that I have never met a "standard child" each one is different... at least until we peg them... squeeze them into some hole they weren't meant to fit into...in the first place... Perhaps the genius in their Creation is not in their sameness but in their difference.
