Gobble Gobble Gobble

Gobble Gobble Gobble

Tis the season to talk turkey(s).  Westchester and Putnam Counties are full of amazing wildlife; from deer, opossum, skunks, and turkeys right on up to bigger animals, including predators.  It is hard to imagine that places so close to New York City could be so secluded and wild-frontier-like.

I look out my window and see the deer prance across the garden or the blue heron come in for a landing.  In the summer evenings, I’m serenaded by the crickets and bullfrogs.  This morning, as I watched a family of wild turkeys patter through my back woods, I decided it was a good time to set pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as it were).

Westchester County has much to offer those who simply want to admire wild animals in its many parks and nature preserves.  Visit the attached link to find out more about the nature sanctuaries throughout Westchester.  One of my favorite parks is Katonah’s Muscoot Farm.   This charming park has barns, a nature center, and many farm animals.  It is a perfect place for children to enjoy a day of visiting the animals, picnicking and maybe even learning a thing or two about history.  I have brought my children there over and over again.  No matter what your age, you’ll enjoy the baby pigs or the seasonal farmers market.

Now, for those who not only admire critters from afar but would also like to invite them home for dinner, Westchester also offers crossbow hunting during specific seasons.

So, if you are one of those people who just like to watch the turkeys cross the road, or if you are more inclined to have your mouth water when they peek out from behind a tree, Westchester has something for everyone.
