One of the great joys in living in lower Westchester county is the wonderful climate. Our growing season is much longer here than areas that within a 70 mile radius. Travel upstate a bit and see a remarkable difference in the leaf and flower development. We also have much milder winters, less snow, more rain, less below freezing days than may commuters that travel farther to their NYC jobs. These are the reasons that we love living here, feeling like a farmer today after working in my garden and able to be in Midtown in a half hour anytime I like.
Today I used the Old Farmer's Almanac guide to planting by the moon to seed my garden. In went red onion sets, beets, spinach, carrots, beans, and corn. I already have garlic growing that I planted in the fall from Steve McCarthy's homestead in Meridale NY. If it can grow there, it will think it is in the tropics here! I put my tomato plants in the ground yesterday and although I am a bit concerned about my early effort with them, it seems like I may have the best production ever due to the early start, and I can grow some tomatoes! I also started some herb seeds and put out marjoram. I started two barrels of above ground potatoes, one red and one white. Tomorrow more kitchen herbs go in and maybe I will have some time for ornamentals.
I have peonies that are almost 12 inches high already. My fruit trees are in bloom. Even my slow to awaken black mission fig is showing signs of life.
Living here I have fertile soil that is ideal for gardening, excellent rain fall and temperatures that are far more suitable for gardening than many not too far neighbors.
If you don't like to do your own gardening, there are many landscape architects and professionals that do admirable work.
If you love the garden as much as I do, you can even take landscape architecture classes and many other kinds of horticulture and art classes at the New York Botanical Garden which is very nearby in the Bronx.
Happy Spring all, get out there and plant something!
