Stew Leonards will light giant Menorah for Hanukkah

Hanukkah Festival of lights commemorates a time 2300 years ago when Syrians wanted the Jewish people to worship their Greek gods. The Jewish community fought back against this mandate for over 3 years and drove the Syrians out of Judea and the Holy Temple in Jerusalem was reclaimed.

The temple was rededicated and an eternal light was lit which barely had enough oil to keep lit for one day. But, miraculously it burned for 8 days. Today, the menorah represents these 8 days where a candle is lit the first day and one added until all 8 candles are lit.

This is a festive holidays celebrated by families. Traditionally children get a small gift each night of the holiday and play games like dreidel, and eat traditional foods like potato latkes.

Not considered a “major” holiday but definitely one to rejoice and enjoy. This year its celebrated from December 8 through December 16, 2012.

Stew Leonards off of 1-87 in Yonkers is having a Menorah lighting
ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11th which will light a 21 foot menorah!

Hanukkah is early this year, so Happy Hanukah to all of those who celebrate this festive occasion.
