I was in a home recently where someone suggested that the wood paneling made the place seem outdated. I, however, find a lot of warmth and comfort in a room with wood paneling. I am very partial to “bringing the outdoors indoors”. The decor in my home consists of a lot of frogs and salamanders, dragons, and flora. My home is surrounded by the woods and a lake. I like to echo my surroundings inside the house. I think that wood paneling helps to make one feel as though they are out in nature. When you add a fireplace, some slippers and a cup of hot cocoa, nothing could more satisfying!
I grew up in a big-ol’ Victorian home. The two most compelling rooms both had wood paneling. The entire house was lovely with detailed hardware throughout, but when people spoke of the house, the two rooms that were everyone’s favorites were the two rooms in the back of the house which were encased in wood paneling (the library and the bar room). One felt relaxed in these rooms, warmed by the glow of the fire and surrounded by wood. The natural and inviting environment created by wood also adds depth and sophistication.
I am working with a client now who is building his own log home. There is no doubt in my mind that all the walls will be wood. Many new log homes are being constructed with the same thought in mind. People are moving to Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess so that they can surrounded by nature, in a serene setting and enjoy the crickets at night and feel like they’re 100 miles from anywhere (even though they can be in New York City within the hour).
If you have a paneled home, don’t let people tell you it's outdated, it is what many people want. It is warm, cozy and it is HOME.
