There's this Facebook page I'm really into, called Peekskill in Pictures. Back in November, we had a huge controversy about the best pizza joint in town. Started with Nonna's, down at Beach Shopping Center. Then it snowballed, with hundreds of votes coming in. Ended up roughly in a 3-way tie, with Nonna's, Amici's and Onofrio's, and a strong runner-up of Forno's on Welcher. Having never tried any others, I went to Onofrio's. Here's my review:
So my brother-in-law and I just went to Onofrio's for the first time. Wanted to see how they stack up against Nonna's. I had a regular slice, so I'd have a fair standard for comparison and a smaller slice that seemed like double deep, but not deep dish, with pepperoni & sausage. Jack had a chicken parm hero. Started with the regular slice, Nice & piping hot. Hot enough to sear your upper palate if you're not careful. Good start. The crust was nice & thin, but thick & heavy enough to support the very generous amount of cheese on top. For my taste, could've been a touch crispier. What really stood out was how light everything tasted. I don't know whether this was because the mozzarella was so fresh, or something else they do to it, but it was really a pleasure to experience. The sauce did not stand out, which ended up being ok. There wasn't all that much of it, it simply served as a nice vehicle for holding the entire package together. Certainly not bad by any means, just nothing that jumped out at ya as remarkable. As a total experience, hot, light to the point of almost fluffy, which was a great experience and very, very filling. Next, that special slice. Didn't expect the double-deep feature when I ordered it, but again, a very pleasant surprise. Same mouth-feel and taste experience, but with even more great cheese. Pepperoni & sausage very thinly sliced, covered maybe 40% of the surface. My brother-in-law says his chicken parm wedge was about a 10” french roll. Crispy outside & in, clearly done in a pizza oven. Not the best bread, not bakery crusty or Arthur Avenue quality, but again, not bad by any means. The chicken parm was authentic and typical of a good NY pizza shop. Serving size was very good. He also felt that the sauce was the kind of sauce that could work well for pretty much anything coming out of a pizza place; be it on a slice or on a wedge. Both the chicken and the cheese were very satisfactory. The atmosphere really added something great to the experience. We just had a ball listening to the guys behind the counter talkin' a mix of classic Noo Yawk City attitude wit dialetto straight from the Old Country. Non ho capito niente. Sounded like a Joe Pesci movie. Made ya feel good, like dis is da real deal. Like dese guys graduated from Whatzamadda U. The verdict? Man, it's a draw. Both Onofrio's & Nonna's are real good. We were both very well pleased with everything. Two slices, one special, a wedge & two sodas; $14.50. I call that a square deal. Emphatically recommended.
